Hareline Petite Bucktail

Hareline Petite Bucktail

Typically sourced from younger deer, Hareline's Petite Bucktails offer all of the tying versatility of their Large Bucktails just on a smaller and often softer tail. The perfect material, whether you're just dipping your toes into tying with bucktail or want something with a bit softer fibers, these tails are ready for anything from saltwater Clousers to Double Deceivers used to target massive trout. Bucktail is a natural material that has a built-in taper and is loaded with movement in the water. It can be tied in a ton of different ways, all while shedding water easily. Soft fibers and a wide range of color options meet a smaller, more affordable bucktail that's ready to stock almost any predator box you have in mind.

Uses

Few materials offer the versatility of Bucktail. Bucktail sheds water quickly and can be used when tying flies that range from small to massive and slim-profiled to super wide. Bucktail has many uses both in fresh and saltwater, but a few of the most common are tails and wings on streamers and Poppers, collars, and the ever-popular Hollow Tying method. These smaller tails tend to have softer fibers that are easier to work with and very well-suited for tying small to medium patterns.

Comparisons

Realistically, Bucktail is a material unlike anything else-and if you want to dissect it further, bucktail is the epitome of a natural material with wide variation, as no two tails are exactly alike. For this reason, there isn't a clean comparable material out there. If you simply want larger tails than what the Petite Tails offer, then Hareline's Large Northern Bucktails are just that. However, if you're looking for a material that does what Bucktail can, there really isn't a suitable alternative, and it's best to stick with the original.

Example Flies

The Mickey Finn, Clouser Deep Minnow, and Hollow Fleye are three incredibly popular patterns that use this material.
